Why $5,000?

We are excited about the Oakhurst Park Fundraiser going on this month! You may be wondering why we set our goal at $5,000. Did you know that during the peak of a hot, dry Texas summer, the park watering bill can reach $800?

It also costs hundreds of dollars per month to keep the park mowed and edged and the curbs cleaned. Of course its totally worth it to enjoy the lush green grass, colorful flowers, and the cool of beautiful healthy old shade trees.

We decided to try to raise $5,000 to make sure we have more than enough to cover all the watering and maintenance bills with some funds left over for emergencies (such as broken sprinklers) and future projects (such as repairs and improvements).

Currently, we are relying on an individual donor to maintain the park. However, that model is not sustainable. We want to make sure that we can keep Oakhurst Park in great condition, even if the generous people we rely on move away, are injured, or have to stop donating. That’s why we raise funds.

100% of everything you donate goes to the park. That’s our commitment to you! Beginning this year, we’ll be collecting bills and specific numbers so that you can see exactly where your money is going. Can I Donate Plants to FOOP?

One of the questions people ask us is “can I donate flowers/trees/shrubs/grass to FOOP?” We love that people want to help! However, in-kind donations are not part of FOOP's model. Why is that? Well, plants are living things and selecting them can be very personal for a lot of people.

For example, maybe you really want your heirloom irises - the ones that have been in your family since your grandmother started them! - to be in the park for everyone to enjoy. But, some kiddos end up running through the flowerbed and they accidentally crush them. That would be upsetting since they were special to you.

Or, let’s say you feel passionately about tulips. You hand-select a ton of gorgeous tulips and plant them in the park, but then someone else comes in and removes them or crowds them out with other plants. Bummer, right?

To avoid these kinds of issues, we do not take in-kind donations of living plants. We want everyone to enjoy the flowers and plants in the park without having to worry about them. We refresh the flower beds periodically so that you can enjoy a variety of plants and be surprised (and hopefully delighted!) by the selections.

We know that a lot park friends are gardeners. We can always use help planting and weeding. Please join us at one of our Spruce Up Oakhurst Park projects and lend us your expertise - and your hands! Not to sound like a broken record, but the best way to help the park is to donate funds to pay for irrigation and maintenance costs.
